ONGC are Elite champions

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) finished on a high to emerge champions of the Elite Division of the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) league. ONGC, who recently earned promotion to the I-League 1st Division, defeated Central Railway 4-1 in the concluding league match at Fr. Agnel’s ground in Vashi near here on Monday.

The architect of ONGC’s fluent win was their dashing striker Kailash Patil who scored a fine hat-trick. Joel Sequeira netted the fourth goal for the champions. Dennis George scored the lone goal for the losing side.

With the three points earned from this win, ONGC finished on the top of the standings with 21 points to clinch the top honour.
Indian Navy, with 20 points, finished runners-up. Akbar Travels and Mumbai Customs, both with 19 points each, were placed third and fourth respectively.

But the former, with a better difference, were placed third. The champions went home richer by Rs1 lakh, while Indian Navy received Rs50,000 and Akbar Travels pocketed Rs25,000.

Meanwhile, Renaissance Sports Club claimed the First Division title of the MDFA league. They defeated Rehma FC by a 7-6 margin via the sudden death in an engrossing final at the St. Xavier’s ground, Parel.

The final ended goalless at the end of regulation period and was extended to the penalty shootout duel. Earlier in the third place match, Greater Mumbai Police overcame Kenkre FC Under-17 by two goals to one. Renaissance striker Lordston Soares was later declared the ‘Player of the tournament’.

Third place: Greater Mumbai Police 2 (Sachin Mohite, V Wagh) bt Kenkre FC Under-17 1 (Faizan Thange)
